TSUGANE SCHOOL

Tsugane School was changed from the former Hokuto City Sudama Historical Museum.

A Western-style elementary school built in the mountains at the southern foot of Mt. Yatsugatake at the beginning of the Meiji period has been restored and turned into a museum. Visitors can experience a nostalgic classroom as it was in the past. There are wooden desks in the classrooms that bring back memories. A celestial globe and organ from the science room, an old world map, a model of the human body, grade reports, class journals, and other nostalgic items. There are also some certificates of awards for perfect attendance, which were given in those days. The drums on the third floor were used in place of bells in those days.

The former Tsugane School was completed in 1875, and this distinctive Fujimura-style building was also known as the Meiji School Building. It was named after Shiro Fujimura, who was the governor of Yamanashi Prefecture at that time. The Taisho School Building was built adjacent to the Meiji School Building in 1924, and Tsugane Junior High School was constructed in 1953. (From Tsugane School pamphlet)

On the first floor, there is a café and dining facility that will make you forget the passage of time. I also had a chance to talk with the museum staff. He was very kind. I would like to visit again.
